Let’s celebrate! Today is an important day for the Joomla! Project. We’re celebrating our 16th birthday. But that’s not all… After 9 years of hard work by our volunteers, we are proud to announce the release of our new major version, Joomla 4.0, alongside Joomla 3.10, known as “the bridge”.

What is Joomla 4?
Joomla 4 is a major version. Meaning we’re bringing plenty of new features. Everything has been redesigned, rethought and of course, we added great new features.

Most importantly, Joomla 4.0 is built for you, designed for all! Joomla4All!
To build new sites with, to migrate from Joomla RC to Joomla stable and also from the Joomla 3.10 series as well as from Joomla 2.5 series.

Joomla 3.10 helps with the transition to Joomla 4
Along with Joomla 4, we are releasing the stable version of Joomla 3.10.
Joomla 3.10 is the bridge between the 2 major series. Joomla 3.10 stable is primarily a release containing backports of API changes from the Joomla 4.0 to help ease the transition to the next major release for the community. Joomla 3.10 will be supported with security patches until 17.08.2023.
Once your website is updated to 3.10, the pre-update checker will allow you to check the compatibility with the Joomla 4.0 minimum requirements in terms of the current hosting environment and, more importantly, your installed extensions. This will help you to prepare your upgrade to Joomla 4.0 smoothly.

Can I update my website from 3.9.x to Joomla 4 Stable?
The simple answer here is yes.
In order to upgrade from 3.9.x to Joomla 4, you must go via the latest 3.10 release. You can use the “Joomla Next” Update Server to point your installation to Joomla 4. In order to provide you with the pre-upgrade checker and having a common code base for upgrading. There is no direct upgrade path between 3.9 and 4.x planned nor supported so all upgrades go through 3.10.
The Joomla! Documentation has an entire section dedicated to migrations and mini-migrations. Most relevant here is the Joomla 3.10.x to 4.x mini-migration documentation. As with all types of migrations, planning is most important. Plan, plan, plan. Planning makes migrations go smoothly.
The funnel, why migrate? gives definitions to the different types of migrations, a self-assessment to determine if you’ll be comfortable doing the migration yourself, links to resources to find a professional to assist you, planning, and step by step instructions.
If you are positive you can do this migration on your own, feel free to start with docs.joomla.org/Planning_for_Mini-Migrat...Joomla_3.10.x_to_4.x. At the bottom of that page will be a great big button that will direct you to the step by step instructions. docs.joomla.org/Joomla_3.x_to_4.x_Step_by_Step_Migration.
